This time 4 years ago we were in COVID lockdown, wondering if our lives would ever be the same again. Mine wouldn’t be… I just didn’t know it yet.
Have you ever thought about what would become of your family and your business if you fell seriously ill, or died?
Many of us have at some stage. Small business owners more than most.
Proactively thinking about that isn’t morbid; it gives you a valuable new perspective.
We all got some new perspectives in the spring of 2020.
I spent it walking and hiking, making precious memories with my wife Eimear, and my then 4 year-old son Manus.
But, by early summer, I had become increasingly tired and weak, and… long story short, I spent the latter half of the year undergoing major surgery and gruelling chemotherapy to battle stage 3 bowel cancer.
Life can change very quickly. At 45, I certainly hadn’t expected that. But, it happens…
I’m better now. That’s great, obviously. But, that’s not why I’m telling you this. It gets even better than that…
I had intentionally built my proptech business with the ultimate goal of selling it some day to fund my retirement, when I’m old and grey(er).
But 2020 made me realise we’re not guaranteed our golden years. We’re not guaranteed anything.
So, just 6 months after my chemo finished, mid-2021, I closed a 7-figure deal to sell my business and start to enjoy a stress-free life right there and then.
Because life is too short.
Because I had a new perspective.
BECAUSE I COULD.
In every crisis there is opportunity. If you’ve prepared and are ready to seize it.
